The consultants role
The role of the consultant
The procurement function is a little bit of a science and a little bit of an art. Procurement must balance on many dimensions: cost, quality, features, speed and many more.

Experience is a valuable asset when taking any major procurement decision and a company that will seek external support can obtain the following benefits:
It will immediately utilize the consultants multifaceted experiences. Idealy, the consultant will have already faced a similar situation, which the company is facing for the first time.
The consultant is looking at the problem "from a distance" and might see aspects, which are not so easily visible by persons who are directly dealing with the problem.
The consultant is less affected by day-to-day personal relationships and might be in a position to judge complex situation more balanced and unbiased. It might be easier for the consultant to achieve a mutualy agreable solution among the parties involved, whether they are inside or outside the company.
The consultant may take two roles, depending upon the actual situation:
The role of a coach:
He analyses the problem and the goals and consults the company personel on the various solutions, without participating in the execution of the work to be done.
The role of the "player":
The consultant will become an active member of the company team and engage in specific tasks to be executed.
